For information about how Traits are selected in the game, see Traits Breakdown.

There are currently a total of 37 known traits. There's also unused 38th "Adopted" trait. Traits change the Heir's capabilities in a variety of ways; some provide benefits, some can be extreme hindrances, others are simply cosmetic or have almost no effect. A hero can have 0-2 non conflicting traits. There's an achievement for choosing a hero with no traits.

Traits[]

Name Description Effect Rarity
Color Blind "You can't see colors due to monochromacy."
"You can't see colors."
This will cause the world to be in grayscale. This will not affect the options menu, or the map when you pause the game. Conflicts with Nostalgic.

Allows to get Nerdy Glasses.
2
Gay "You like the ladies." If Female
"You are a fan of the man." If Male
"You're fabulous." (Demo Only)
"blurb" (tLoZ mod Only)
Changing who greets the player as their lover in the final cutscene. 1
Near-Sighted "Anything far away is blurry." The area of the screen away from the hero is blurred. Conflicts with Far-Sighted.

Allows to get Nerdy Glasses.
2
Far-Sighted "Anything close-up is blurry." Your vision is blurry near your character. Conflicts with Near-Sighted.

Allows to get Nerdy Glasses.
3
Dyslexia "You hvae trboule raednig tinhgs." Turns some text in the game into text which has all but the first and last letters scrambled. Oddly enough it also scrambles dialogue (such as that given by the blacksmith or enchantress). 3
Gigantism "You were born to be a basketball player."
"You are huge."
Makes hero incredibly huge, which allows to solve certain Fairy Chest Challenges with sword swings/downstrikes but makes it harder to dodge/move in some places. If you fall a long distance, it may "thud" with a cloud of dust upon landing. Conflicts with Dwarfism. 1
Dwarfism "You never get to ride rollercoasters."
"You are tiny."
Makes hero incredibly small, which allows access to some shortcuts (marked by darker patches of wall) and treasure/fairy chests unreachable for any other heroes. However, sword swing range is greatly reduced. Can make dodging easier and attacking harder. Conflicts with Gigantism.

In the demo, Dwarfism also has the effects of P.A.D - traps will not be set off. (?)
1
Baldness "The bald and the beautiful."
"You are bald."
Removes feathers from helmet.

Makes the loading screen for the Castle say "Balding" instead of "Building."
1
Endomorph "You're so heavy, enemies can't knock you back."
"Can't get knocked back."
Removes knockback from enemy attacks.

Makes the hero slightly larger. Conflicts with Ectomorph.
1
Ectomorph "You're skinny, so every hit sends you flying."
"Hits send you flying."
Greatly increases knockback from enemy attacks.

Your character will also appear to be quite skinny. Conflicts with Endomorph.
2
Alzheimers "You have trouble remembering where you are."
"Where are you?"
The Map is removed entirely yet the Minimap still functions normally. You can still get a look at the map when accessing waypoints (but with no info and little navigation). Less effective on the Ps4 version as you can still use the touch pad to navigate the minimap.

Replaced by Acrophobia in the Lament of Zors mod.
3
Acrophobia (tLoZ Only) "You have trouble dealing with heights."
"You take fall damage."
Falling from a height greater than that of a jump deals damage to you.

Replaces Alzheimers in the Lament of Zors mod.
3
Dextrocardia "Your MP and HP pools are swapped. Who knew?"
"MP + HP pools swapped."
HP and MP bars switch places and maximum values. This is generally a negative trait due to the fact you often end up having more HP than MP, so a character with dextrocardia will have a very small health bar and be easier to kill, but an Archmage might end up with more HP than usual. 2
Coprolalia "%#&@!" Hero "swears" (actually a grawlix) when hit, reducing recovery time. The Hero's final words are also replaced with a "swear".

Originally called Tourettes
Tourettes

Coprolalia Example

1

ADHD

"So energetic! You move faster."
"You move faster."
Character moves 30% faster. 1
O.C.D. "Must. Clear. House. Break stuff to restore MP."
"Break stuff to restore MP."
Hero gains 1 MP per environmental object destroyed. (vase, table, chair, clown's targets etc.). 1
Hypergonadism "You're perma-roided. Attacks knock enemies further."
"You knock enemies out of the park."
Drastically improves knockback. Conflicts with Muscle Wk.

Helps to push enemies into spikes/away. Doesn't affect the majority of bosses.
1
Muscle Wk. "You have weak limbs. Enemies won't get knocked back."
"You can't knock enemies back."
You can't knock back enemies. Conflicts with Hypergonadism. 3
Stereo Blind "You can't see in 3D." Both the hero and enemies do not have turning animations and instead will show as a flipping sprite.

Some enemy sprites move behind objects in the background, briefly obscuring them. (?)
1
I.B.S. "Even the most valiant heroes can suffer from irritable bowels."
"You fart a lot."
Hero occasionally farts while jumping or dashing. 2
Vertigo "Welcome to Barfs-ville."
"Everything is upside down."
Everything on the screen is mirrored vertically (simply rotating the picture/screen will still be reversed.) The only exception is the castle upgrade screen (all NPC menus are still flipped).
Allows to get Nerdy Glasses.
Vertigo Example
3
Tunnel Vision "No peripheral vision."
"No early indicators."
Projectile indicators at the edge of the screen are not shown.   2
Ambilevous "You've got two left hands, and can't cast spells properly."
"Spells come out your back."
Question marks particles spawn above your head, spells come out your back instead of your front and their horizontal movement is reversed.

This allows you to attack enemies/bosses while running away without having to turn around.
2
P.A.D. "Peripheral Arterial Disease. No foot pulse."
"No foot pulse."
Hero does not set off spike traps. 2
Alektorophobia "Chickens freak you out."
"You are scared of chickens."
Breakable objects spawn a small chicken enemy "Kentucky" instead of dropping a chicken leg. Kentucky drops a chicken leg upon death and doesn't despawn when you leave the room. Quitting to the Title Screen does despawn the chicken. Killing it grants the achievement Alektorophobia, vampirism regen/syphon/lich max hp boost. Boss entrance/Waypoint room statues don't spawn chickens but otherwise chickens can spawn anywhere. They are the weakest enemy in the game.

In the TLoZ mod the tier 2 chicken "Fried" spawns instead with its lv boosted by 1000 levels so its contact damage is lethal. Its current hp is capped at 42 so at least it is still killable.

2
Hypochondriac "You tend to EXAGGERATE."
"Exaggerate the damage you take."
When the player is hurt, a four- or five-digit number will show as the damage dealt.

The damage number will be approximately 100 times the damage you receive: Looking at the first two/three digits of the number will tell you how much damage you took.
3
Dementia "You are insane."
"You see things that aren't there."
There's a 20% chance of a fake tier 1 enemy spawning every time you enter a room where enemies can spawn except for fairy chest challenge rooms.

Enemy type is random and you can get an enemy that cannot normally spawn in this biome. This and the fact that fake enemies stay tier 1 in NG+ makes it easy to suss out whether an enemy is an imposter or not. Also stats/names of fake enemies are not displayed when the game is paused.
Fake enemies/their attacks behave as normal except they do not affect the player and cannot be affected by the player. Fake projectiles go through walls. Attempts to damage a fake enemy (except Spiketor) spawn question mark particles floating up. All fake enemies start out facing/moving right except for Spiketor. Fake enemies stop existing when you leave the room.
If a fake Spiketor hits walls too often it dies and can be used as an infinite source of gold/hp/mana.

3
Flexible "You are very flexible."
"You turn while fighting."
The hero can turn mid-swing to redirect their attack. 2
Eid. Mem. "You remember things with extreme clarity."
"Remember enemy placement."
Enemies and spiked balls of visited rooms appears on your map and minimap. Traps, split slimes and balls from dead Chaintors do not. 2
Nostalgic "You miss the good old days."
"Everything is old-timey."
Gives the game a sepia tone and a grainy overlay, as in the tutorial. Conflicts with Color Blind.

Makes the loading screen for the Castle say 'Reminiscing' instead of 'Building.'

Allows to get Nerdy Glasses
3
C.I.P. "Congenital Insensitivity to Pain. Know no pain."
"No visible health bar."
Hero health bar does not display health. 3
Savant "You're very talented. With a few issues."
"Randomized spells."
Gives you a random spell after you cast the one currently displayed. 2
The One "There is no spork." Changes the background and foreground textures to a futuristic black-and-neon theme. This is the same theme used in all Boss Remix rooms.

Makes the loading screen for the Castle say "Jacking In" (Which is a reference to the Matrix trilogy movies) instead of "Building".
Theone
3
Clumsy "You break a lot of things."
"You break stuff and have no balance."
Hero cannot stand on bookshelves and all breakable objects will be broken when touched.

Currently when landing on top of breakable objects, there is a momentary collision that allows the Hero to jump off of the objects if the jump is timed properly.
2
EHS "You conduct electricity really well."
"Platforms stay open."
All platforms will stay open all the time. 2
Glaucoma "It's so dark." Experience darkness in all zones.

Fully counteracted by the Spelunker class headlamp.
2
Clonus "You have random muscle spasms." Occasionally during gameplay, the game controller will vibrate suddenly and intensely for approximately 5 seconds. On PC (console untested), the screen will also shake somewhat.

Wasn't added to the Lament of Zors mod.
2
Prosopagnosia "You can't tell people apart." You cannot see any information about your successors (name, class, traits, etc.) when choosing one for the next run. A class's respective controller light color still shows up on the Ps4 version of the game.

Wasn't added to the Lament of Zors mod.

Quote from developers: Near Sighted and Far sighted traits were originally called Myopia and Hyperopia. A lot of the trait names were changed to make it easy for people to see at a glance. For example, Hypergonadism and Hypogonadism gave large knockback and no knockback respectively. Hypogonadism was turned into Muscle Weakness to make it easier for people to see the difference from visually skimming the character portraits.
